Akron/Family: Circle, Triangle, Square

Akron/Family, Josephine Foster and Mi & L'au entered Festsaal Kreuzberg stage last Friday, April 13th. With the sharpest analysis possible our man for action Martin G Fuller went there, came, saw and conquered. Read his voice rapping about essence, power, fun and mistakes:

Before I finish this sentence, let me preface by saying I mean this in the best of ways - Akron/Family are total geeks, but they do make a hell of a 4 part crescendo harmony. The show at Festsaal Kreuzberg, Friday April 13th, confirmed the rumor that “the fam” know how to let loose.

Young God labelmates Mi & L’au opened with beautiful songs of austere places. She’s French, He’s Finnish, they are both pretty and reportedly in love. Following this was a forgettable set of traditional-experimental folk by Josephine Foster and an accompanying guitarist. In contrast to Mi & L’au, Foster et al sounded harsh and uncomfortable together. The Akron Family played tracks from all 3 Young God releases, including their psych, improv, noisy, indie, clappy, shouty hootenanny hits – Raising the Sparks, Sorrow Boy, Moment etc. The climax of the show was a 10 minute hip-hop jam freak-out complete with freestyling human beat-box courtesy of drummer Dana Janssen, and the entire crowd singing ‘circle, triangle, square. yeah, yeah, yea, yea, yeah”.

These guys are shameless advocators of fun, absolutely shameless; which to me, is a breath of fresh air. Maybe they are music geeks shamelessly screwing around and playing the musical equivalent of inside-jokes with their best friends, but so what? As bass-player Miles Seaton repeatedly declared, “there ain’t nuthin’ wrong, with havin’ a good time”. So come on y’all. mgf
