mushroom w/ eddie galeJoint Happening is the right name. Joint: a link, a space-out drug. Happening: Cage, Fluxus. What's being linked and juxtaposed is a San Francisco jam band collective (they call themselves "Mushroom," which says it all) and a legendary trumpeter, Eddy Gale, who's played with people like Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra. This sounds more like Miles Davis though. Extended joint improves - good musicians who really listen to each other. Big open music landscapes, lush and dreamy. Sometimes little tears let through some more violence and force. Its got a hippy jam band feel from the San Francisco people and a luxuriousness from the mellotron and the marimbas. Best of the recent Our Mouth stuff is the first Sullivan solo CD-R. Sullivan's comes under the name Eskimo King, and /Tooth-Shaped Migration/ is five thick, detailed chunks of sound spread over a quick 17 minutes. What I dig most about Sullivan is his wide-open outlook on what sounds are worth making. Mouthus may concoct a lot of deep, textured noise, but they also use acoustic guitar loops, dirgey metal-like stomps, polyrhtyhmic meditations, busted rock riffs, and tons more.
