OVOAt times sounding like a Karp glory-days glue-huffing band practice, other times like young space children trying to invent songs, Italy's Ovo create their own little world complete with language and musical vernacular. The heavy doomsday songs mix well with strange poetic numbers to a nice effect, though their heavy drone sometimes sits awkwardly inbetween the hi-fidelity crushing of bands like Khanate and a live recording of a guitar played through a cheap busted practice amp. Rio Barbaira and the final title track are real high-points, both accomplishing what it seems Ovo has set out to do with the vocals sounding more natural, the tones merging together just right, the Ovo world congealing into something quite impressive. Strangely, I find the first 3 tracks the least appealing, while midway through the album with Mammut they really begin to take off in their own crazy direction, entering the territory where they are most surprising and raw. Worth checking out, as they seem like the kind of band that will only get better as they get stranger. :: OVO: Miastenia - Load Records/Cargo
